Beaching a Boat, Brighton 1824

Constable made this sketch on one of his first visits to Brighton in 1824. Later he used it when painting the large Chain Pier, Brighton which hangs to the right.
In the final picture a different boat is shown further offshore but the same watching figure reappears on thebeach. At Brighton Constable was quick to respond to the beached fishing boats or vessels close to the shore, using their vertical accents as a counterfoil to the horizontals of the sea and beach.
